So many feelings in this post. I love the idea of memory reconsolidation. I've never thought about it that way, but have always been suspect of my rememberings. This is a helpful phrase. Your sketches and accompanying notes are stunning and I'm sure very cathartic for you (and for the reader). I wish you the best as you move through them. And finally, I just went to Lupo two nights ago with my guy, as a special treat on our little trip to Vancouver. Such a delight!
Yes, Lupo! 😁 I do believe we did have the “charming” Italian waiter…he was so charming to my partner that he gave him not one but TWO different Negroni’s to decide which one he liked better (and ensured we knew he only charged us for one). We had a lovely appy of octopus carpaccio and my fella had lamb shank and I had sablefish. And then an orange almond cake thing (Italian?) for dessert. And a lovely bottle of Sangiovese. A delightful and indulgent dinner, indeed! I do love the charm of the little house. And the stained glass…ahhh the beautiful hummingbird! And after dinner, an easy stroll across the street to our hotel. We are from Victoria (I’m part of the Jill Margo Fan Club) and we were in Van for The National concert at Deer Lake Park the following night. A lovely little mini vacay!
Of course yes, I remember your name now! And my God, we had the octopus too and it was incredible. Mini-vacays are good for the soul... I just wish I could afford to do it more often! 🥲
That one line alone… thanks BA for another fabulous read. Kind of feel like I got to go to Vancouver through you on this one. Happy belated birthday amazing human.
I really don't think you need to feel foolish writing about another artist's work, because what you wrote here is so much better than any artspeak! I didn't know Shary Boyle's work but now I'm intrigued after reading your description.
Also: I'm woefully behind on my newsletters so only now getting to say BRAVO on your being back in the saddle on the graphic memoir! I, for one, am glad you're not "a highly functioning art-producing machine" because that sounds boring, though of course I share your desire to work in a more straightforwardly productive way!
Thanks so much, Mason! My husband and I have had a challenging year, so there was no way to be an art-producing machine, let alone a highly-functioning one. That I somehow made it back to the graphic memoir is a reminder to me that nothing-is-absolute and you-never-know and keep-an-open-mind-and-don't-tell-yourself-too-many-set-in-stone-stories-about-what-your-fate-must-be. In other words, keep the faith!
And yes---Shary Boyle! Check out her website... she's phenomenal.
I love how you wrote about how you willingly offered yourself to the gaze of the woman in the stilettos. I found it moving to read for some reason. Humans humaning. ❤️

W h a a a a a t ? You went to Lupo? Did you have the "charming" Italian waiter? What did you eat? Do tell all! Where were you travelling from?

Wow, what a wonderful, thought provoking read I stumbled upon at 2:30 am…guess I’ll be up a bit longer. Beautifully written BA.
Thank you so much Kristine!
