Ha ha, this is true. My partner David pointed out that as a woman, shouldn't I be allowed to call myself a girl? And of course, yes. I just got momentarily caught in uncertainty about using the term "Atta Girl" in general. But as I *hope* was clear in my post, I was trying to make fun of my own hesitation about it!
I am the partner...I read FTM a few times before release, proofread, make suggestions, discuss, etc. Lots of discussion surrounding the nomenclature of the Barbie in question for this edition. When I read it yesterday it was the Atta Girl vs Brava that tweaked me. Like you Kristine, it seemed to me that a grown-ass woman such as BA should be able to use the term girl if it so pleases her. I like BRAVA, it's exotic and does have that gravitas BA refers to, but I don't react to it the same way because Atta Girl is phrase that is embedded in me. The negativity of Atta Girl is that traditionally, uttered by a male usually in some position of authority, there is something condescending about it. Like ...you're a girl, but you managed to do this....Atta Girl! Has the phrase evolved to be genuine? Does it need to come from a woman to a woman, or herself? Have women successfully re appropriated and repurposed the phrase? I'm not super savvy in the world of semantics and gender, so I'll leave it there....dps
