Oh yes, I have also experienced those thoughts of "who do I think I am making this work?"

I'm also ok with unpredictability as I really enjoy reading whatever is going on with you. I have been caught in that situation where I promised to send out something then I feel pressure to get it done and rush through it and it ends up being less than what I promised. Hope that makes sense!

Yes, and thank you Kathy!

Omg, *the place that time forgot* — yes. I find these rumbling are particularly loud when you wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep. Too much primordial ooze, thanks!

My quick reply to your Qs: I'm fine with and even appreciate a certain amount of unpredictability, and would rather read what you're actually thinking about or excited to do in the moment vs. what you promised or feel obligated to do. Clear-cut, dependable, predictable... not really craving that from FTM, to be honest!

Does Feed the Monster need a more clear-cut concept, something dependable and predictable each month?

~ Unpredictable is good. I prefer it for the purposes of the FTM project. The monster must be fed. The monster is not picky.

Would you consider paying anything for my efforts? ~ YES - I would be more than happy to support your work in whatever way I can.

Would you be more likely to do so for the serialization of Life’s Work, the graphic memoir? ~ if supporting the Life's Work project gives you the boost you need to get through the final 1/8 I would choose this.

Would you feel ripped off if I digressed one month? ~ No. No. No.

What if I did something different for three months… a series of paintings I’ve been thinking of doing for a couple of years now? It would be a kind of self-imposed 100 Day Project. And it would be a break from thinking about my mother. Then I would start the graphic memoir.

~ you do what you need to do. I (we) are here for it.

Thank you so much, Emilie! You are too kind. To be clear, the final 1/8 at the moment is just the lead-up to the show at the Victoria Arts Council that opens June 3rd. The graphic memoir is something I'll be starting *after* that, and will probably take years! It'll be a whole different ball of wax.

Oh yeah…can I hear you!!! I also love the unpredictability…that holds my interest more than anything. It also is imperative to your freedom, or so I think. I also love that I can just read this without a payment. But that doesn’t mean I don’t value your work. I just count my pennies constantly. There is nothing clear cut about making art…other than the utter necessity of it. I love that you allow your readers in to see the thought process, the scary bits, the hunger for it all. So ending this with a great big THANK YOU.

Thank YOU Kristine! Good to know about the unpredictability. And yes, of course I understand preferring free newsletters 😅. I get so many Substack newsletters, there's no way I could pay for them all. I now pay for two—Austin Kleon's and Mason Currey's Subtle Maneuvers.

FTM is fantastic the way it is. I like some unpredictability and appreciate the vulnerability of your sharing. It is authentic and resonates with me. I would consider paying for your thoughts and a window into your artistic process. Wish it were in $CDN.

Thank you Karen... all very good to know! I appreciate your thoughts. As for the currency... understood, but Substack is an U.S. company so unfortunately I have no choice there.
